I’m too prone to existential crises to watch horror movies. My sister decided we were going to watch Halloween, as in the Michael Myers movie, and now all I can think of is the inevitability and unpredictability of death.
That is indeed one of the big themes of Halloween beginning with the opening dolly shot of the Jack-’o-Lantern that turns into the skull to the ticking doom-clock of John Carpenter’s synth score. But Laurie saves herself and the children she babysits from a premature death by maintaining situational awareness and using her intelligence resourcefully. It’s okay to think about death, but it helps to develop perspective on it. Horror films can help in that regard.
